Can ChatGPT make floor plans?

Most of the hard thinking in a floor plan happens before anyone draws a line. That’s where ChatGPT shines. Give it your real situation, and it can help you:

• Write a brief. Who will live there, how you use the house, what’s a must-have and what can wait.
• Build a room program. Every room with a target size, plus a total square footage you can check.
• Think through adjacency. What should sit next to what, which rooms need quiet, and where plumbing can share a wall.
• Test the flow. Walk through a layout in words and spot long halls, dead ends and doors that collide.
• Prepare for the permit office. Draft questions for your building department and a likely sheet list to confirm with them.
• Explain the jargon. Elevations, sections, setbacks, title blocks: it’s patient with every question.

It can make a picture of one. ChatGPT can generate images from a description and edit an image you upload. Ask for a floor plan, and you’ll get something that looks like one, sometimes a convincing one.

But a generated image is a flat picture, not a drawing:

• The numbers may not add up. A room labeled 12 by 14 may not measure 12 by 14, and the rooms may not add up to the overall size.
• Nothing is editable. You can’t select a wall and move it 2 feet. You ask again, and the new version can change things you wanted to keep.
• It isn’t to scale. You can’t print it at 1/4 inch to the foot and measure from it.
• Labels need checking. Even OpenAI’s own image prompting guide tells you to verify the labels in diagrams.

ChatGPT can also write code that draws a simple outline, which can get the numbers closer. But the result is still a one-off file. Each change means generating it again, and there are no doors that know which wall they’re in, no sheets and no title block.

As for blueprints: today the word usually means a set of construction drawings, not a blue picture. A set is several sheets that have to agree with each other. A single image, however nice, isn’t that.

ChatGPT changes often, and features vary by plan. This is the general picture, not a review of a specific version.

Building plans for a permit are a set. That usually means a site plan, floor plan, elevations, a section and often an electrical plan, each drawn to scale with a title block. ChatGPT can help you plan that set and write the questions to ask about it; the building permit drawings checklist covers what’s commonly included. But a chat reply doesn’t produce the sheets.

What about AutoCAD or other CAD programs? ChatGPT doesn’t operate your CAD software from a chat window. It can write things a CAD program can use, like a script, an AutoLISP routine or a list of coordinates. If you already know CAD, that can save time. If you don’t, running and debugging that code becomes its own project, and you still have to check every line it draws.

What about a ChatGPT floor plan generator?

Search for one, and you’ll find plenty of tools that promise a floor plan from a prompt. Before you rely on one, ask three questions:

• Can I change one wall without starting over?
• Do the room dimensions add up to the overall dimensions?
• Can I print it at a stated scale, along with the other sheets I need?

If the answer is no, it’s a picture generator. That’s fine for ideas. Just don’t plan your framing around it.

The fix isn’t a cleverer prompt. It’s giving the AI the right tools.

When a language model is connected to a drafting program, it stops painting pixels. It places walls, doors, windows and dimensions as objects in a drawing, the same objects you’d place by hand. That changes a lot:

• Dimensions come from the geometry, so they stay consistent when something moves.
• You can ask for a change, or make it yourself with the drawing tools.
• A revision changes what’s already there instead of starting over.
• The plan sits on a sheet at a real scale, next to the other sheets in the set.

So let ChatGPT do what it’s good at, the planning, and let a drafting tool do the drawing.

1. Write your brief with ChatGPT. Ask it to interview you about your needs, and to mark its assumptions. These ChatGPT floor plan prompts are a good place to start.
2. Get a room program. Ask for every room with a target size and a total. Check the math yourself.
3. Work out the layout in words. Ask what should sit next to what, compare two or three options, and walk through each one.
4. Gather your real numbers. Your survey or plat, the setbacks, and the footprint you can build. See how to draw a site plan.
5. Draw it in a CAD tool. Start with the exterior walls and overall dimensions, then rooms, doors and windows.
6. Check every dimension. The rooms should add up to the whole, and doors shouldn’t collide.
7. Add the other sheets. Site plan, elevations, sections and electrical, as your project needs them.
8. Confirm with your building department. Ask what they need before you submit. Some projects also need an engineer’s stamp.
